Nels Cline
Nels Cline (born January 4, 1956 in Los Angeles ) is an American guitarist of modern creative jazz .
Live and act
Cline played with his twin brother, the percussionist Alex Cline , from an early age. He graduated from University Senior High School in Los Angeles, where he continued to be active. Together with his brother, the violinist Jeff Gauthier and the bass player Eric Von Essen , he founded the group Quartet Music in 1979 . In 1983 he also formed the band Bloc with Steuart Liebig . He took part in various Vinnie Golia projects and founded his own trio , initially oriented towards fusion jazz , The Nels Cline Singers ( Initiate ), and continued to reduce his means of expression until he achieved a hard and minimalist sound, which he often performed in duo Projects with Thurston Moore and Elliott Sharp . He is a member of the band Banyan . He also worked with Charlie Haden , Wadada Leo Smith , Tim Berne , Stacy Rowles , Jessica Lurie and Steuart Liebig, but also with Mike Watt and Willie Nelson . On Gregg Bendian's album Interstellar Space Revisited , he transferred the part of John Coltrane to guitar. He had a similar role on the album Electric Ascension (2003), which the Rova Saxophone Quartet recorded with guests. In the Acoustic Guitar Trio with Jim McAuley and Rod Poole he dealt with microtonal improvisation. Since 2004 Cline has been lead guitarist for the US independent rock band Wilco . In 2013 he recorded with Medeski, Martin & Wood Woodstock Sessions, Vol. 2 , which was released in 2014.
Wolf Kampmann describes Cline as one of the few style-defining jazz guitarists on the American west coast. In 2007 Rolling Stone magazine listed him among the new top guitarists.
In 2011, the Rolling Stone listed Cline as 82 of the 100 best guitarists of all time .
