Stacy Rowles

Stacy Rowles (born September 11, 1955 in Los Angeles , California , † October 27, 2009 in Burbank , California) was an American jazz musician ( trumpet , flugelhorn , vocals ).

Rowles was the daughter of jazz pianist Jimmy Rowles , with whom she learned the piano from the age of six before he taught her the basics of trumpet playing on an old trumpet that previously belonged to Pete Candoli . During her time at Orange Coast College she was named best soloist. With her father she performed at the 1973 Monterey Jazz Festival ; In 1975 she played in a women's band led by Clark Terry . In 1979 she was one of the founding members of the Maiden Voyage Big Band with Ann Patterson . In the 1980s she played with trombonist Betty O'Hara in the Jazz Birds Quintet , which was formed from the big band. In 1984 she made her debut album for Concord Records . She belonged to the circle around Nels Cline and played on his Enja album Angelica (1987) with Tim Berne . She has also performed with Dizzy Gillespie , Tommy Flanagan , Frank Mantooth and the Clayton - Hamilton Orchestra. She also toured with her father, with the Swinging Ladies , with Eric Von Essen's Jazz Tap Ensemble , the Diva Jazz Orchestra and in Europe since 2002 several times with the band WitchCraft . Rowles, who, according to Feathers / Gitler, played with a similar warmth and precision to her father, died of her serious injuries after a car accident that she suffered on October 13, 2009.
