Donald Bailey (drummer)

Donald "Duck" Bailey Orlando (* 26. March 1934 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ; † 15. October 2013 ) was an American jazz - drummer .

Bailey was self-taught and became known as the drummer of the organist Jimmy Smith , with whom he worked between 1955 and 1964 and recorded several albums for Blue Note . Until the mid-1970s he worked in Los Angeles, then five years (until 1982) in Japan, where he played with a trio with whom he recorded an album as a band leader; he also played the harmonica . In 1999 his album Voyage was released . After returning to the United States, he lived in Oakland.

Bailey had been a sought-after accompanist since the 1950s. He played recordings a. a. with George Braith , Harold Land , Sonny Rollins , Hampton Hawes , George Benson , Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae .
