Hampton Hawes (* 13. November 1928 in Los Angeles , California ; † 22. May 1977 ) was an American jazz - pianist .

Career

Hawes learned to play the piano self-taught and had as a teenager opportunity to work with musicians such as Dexter Gordon , Sonny Criss , Teddy Edwards and Wardell Gray to play. During a collaboration with Howard McGhee's band he was able to perform with Charlie Parker from 1950 to 1951 . From 1952 to 1954, Hawes served in the US Army . Immediately afterwards he went on a trip to Japan, where he met Toshiko Akiyoshi , with whom he had a lifelong friendship.

Lester Koenig , who had met Hawes in a band under Shorty Rogers , won him over for the Contemporary Records label , for which he recorded six albums with his trio with Red Mitchell and Chuck Thompson from 1955 to 1956 (partly expanded by guitarist Jim Hall ). He also worked with Lennie Niehaus , Barney Kessel , Art Pepper , Bill Perkins , Charles Mingus ( Mingus Three , 1957), Sonny Rollins ( Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders , 1958) and Harold Land ( For Real!, 1958).

In November 1958, Hawes, who had been in the military prison for drug problems while serving in the Army, was arrested for possession of heroin . In 1963 he was pardoned by President John F. Kennedy . But he was never able to build on his successes in the 1950s. In 1974 his autobiography, Raise Up Off Me, was published (German under the title of deep breath. Autobiography of a jazz musician 1983).
