Ethan Iverson (born February 11, 1973 in Menomonie ) is an American jazz musician (piano, composition) and music critic, who first became known in the trio The Bad Plus .

Live and act

Iverson became interested in jazz from a young age and attended the Stanford Jazz Workshop before moving to New York City in the early 1990s. During this time he studied privately with Fred Hersch and Sophia Rosoff . In 1993 he released the album School Work with Dewey Redman , Johannes Weidenmüller and Falk Willis . In 1998 Iverson released the albums Construction Zone (Originals) and Deconstruction Zone (Standards) in trio . He played with Billy Hart on The Minor Passions (1999) . The following year Live at Smalls appeared with saxophonist Bill McHenry and bassist Reid Anderson . From 1998 to 2002 he was also musical director of the Mark Morris Dance Group .

Between 2001 and 2017 Iverson was the pianist of the collaborative trio Bad Plus , with whom he released numerous albums and toured successfully internationally. He also played in Billy Hart's quartet and has worked with artists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel , Tim Berne , Lee Konitz , Tootie Heath , Paul Motian , Larry Grenadier , Charlie Haden and Ron Carter .

In 2018, Iverson's duo album Temporary Kings with saxophonist Mark Turner was released by ECM Records . The live album Common Practice followed in 2019, presented by Iverson's quartet with trumpeters Tom Harrell , Ben Street and Eric McPherson . In the field of jazz he was involved in 48 recording sessions between 1993 and 2017, according to Tom Lord . a. also with Christophe Schweizer , Reid Anderson, Patrick Zimmerli , Phil Grenadier and Martin Speake .

Since 2005, Iverson's blog Do the Math has been a closely followed and award-winning collection of interviews and critical analyzes of contemporary jazz; In 2014 he was Blog of the Year at the JJA Awards of the Jazz Journalists Association . He has been teaching jazz as a faculty member at the New England Conservatory since 2016 .
