Chris Cheek

Chris Cheek (born September 16, 1968 in St. Louis / Missouri ) is an American jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone ).

Cheek started playing the saxophone at the age of twelve. While studying at Webster University , he performed with various regional bands. He then went to Boston, where he studied at Berklee College of Music with Joe Viola , Hal Crook and Herb Pomeroy until 1991 .

Since he came to New York in 1992, he worked a. a. with Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band , Seamus Blakes The Bloomdaddies , Charlie Hadens Liberation Music Orchestra , Wolfgang Muthspiel , Luciana Souza , David Berkman , Stephan Crump , Jen Chapi and Guillermo Klein's Los Guachos . In addition to over 100 albums in which he worked as a sideman, he published a. a. at Fresh Sound Records and Sunnyside Records several albums as band leader. From the 2000s on, Cheek continued to work with musicians such as Lee Konitz , Ferenc Németh , Joshua Redman , Chris Speed , Frank Carlberg, Yotam Silberstein , Chris Lightcap , Aaron Goldberg , Steve Swallow , Miguel Zenon , Justin Mullens , Alan Ferber and Pierre Perchaud . In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 125 recording sessions between 1989 and 2019.

According to All About Jazz , Cheek knows how to create and play complex compositions; his album Saturday Songs (2016) "complex, yet melodically clear and enticing."
