List of apple varieties

The Altländer pancake apple (also known as real pancake apple) is an old apple variety that arose as a chance seedling in the Altes Land around 1840 . The variety is an old commercial variety that - previously a common market variety - is now only grown by enthusiasts.

The Altländer pancake apple variety is currently listed on the red list of endangered indigenous crops in Germany . This red list includes all types of indigenous useful plants and their varieties, local varieties and varieties that were adapted to local conditions in Germany and were important.

In 2006, the Altländer pancake apple was voted “ Orchard of the Year ” in Northern Germany .

The tree grows weak to medium and forms a broad crown. The yield starts late, then is high, but not regular. The variety prefers well-hydrated, nutrient-rich soils. It is not very susceptible to disease.

The apple is medium to large in size with a broad, flat, often irregular shape. It has a green-yellow basic color with a red, streaky covering color. The taste is sweet and sour with only a slight aroma. The apple is ready to be picked from the end of October and ready to eat from February, making it one of the winter apples ; large fruits were previously stored for use as kitchen apples until June.
