List of apple varieties |
Finkenwerder Herbstprinz , also called 'Finkenwerder Prinzenapfel' or 'Hasenkopf', is the name of an old apple variety from the Lower Elbe . It is described as bell-shaped, green, with red stripes on one side, aromatic tart-sweet to slightly sour. It can be enjoyed from October to March. The Finkenwerder Herbstprinz tends to wither - although it is only slightly wilted that it achieves its full aroma and thus the optimum maturity.
In the 1960s this variety was an important industrial apple in the Hamburg area , today it has almost disappeared. It is a chance seedling from the grand prince family . The real prince's apple had been widespread in northern Germany since the 18th century . Varieties like the Holstein gold prince did not reach the quality of the real prince's apple. The Finkenwerder Herbstprinz has at least achieved the quality, it is also uncomplicated to grow and brings good annual harvests.
reception
As it was mentioned several times in Dörte Hansen's novel Altes Land (2015) , the historic apple variety received nationwide attention.
