Walter Hartmann (biologist)
Walter Hartmann (* 1943 ) is a German biologist , plum breeder and non-fiction author . He is known for breeding some plum varieties such as Hanka , Hanita or Jojo , the latter being important due to its hypersensitivity (resistance) to Sharka disease . He brought up a total of 20 different types of plum, which is why he was nicknamed the plum pope .
activity
Hartmann was an academic senior councilor at the fruit growing institute for special crops and production physiology at the University of Hohenheim . His research focus was on the breeding and selection of fruit, especially plums , which made the Hohenheim location an international leader in terms of plum breeding . He also examined fruit species that shape the landscape.
He was chairman of the stone fruit working group of the Federal Expert Group on Fruit Growing for 17 years. Hartmann is chairman of the international plum genetics working group. He has been the second chairman of the “Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Old Fruit Types” since it was founded. He has been the editor of the Color Atlas of Old Fruit Varieties since 2000 . Even when he retired in 2008, he was still working regularly at the University of Hohenheim, where he continued to evaluate his research material and created an annual calendar with orchards . He is active in the Filderstadt orchard network, which aims to preserve biotopes around Filderstadt .
Honors
In November 2007 he was awarded the Ernst Schröder Mint by the Central Horticultural Association. In 2015 he received the Georg Arends Medal from the Central Horticultural Association . Hartmann received the state gold medal from the state of Baden-Württemberg in October 2018.
