The 'Martini' , also known as 'Grand Duke's Favorite', is a table apple variety from Kollmar and the orchard variety of 2011 in Northern Germany . The 'Martini' emerged as a chance seedling and was discovered and propagated around 1875.
Origin and Distribution
The distribution is mainly in northern Germany . However, individual specimens can also be found throughout Germany. The name was given after St. Martin's Day (November 11th), as the apple was discovered around this date.
Other sources describe the naming not according to the time of discovery, but according to the harvest time in late autumn. The place of discovery, next to the lock in Kollmar, is also specified. The origin is located in the 18th century, probably as a seedling from ' Edelborsdorfer ' and ' Prinzenapfel '.
Variety characteristics
'Martini' delivers small to medium-sized, variable fruits. The shape goes from very round to slightly conical. The skin is light green to light yellow. In addition, it has a chimney-red covering color on one side and is slightly rough. The flesh is initially firm, later tender. The color of the flesh is yellow-whitish. The taste is pleasantly sweet and sour.
The tree grows moderately. It is very healthy, cancer-proof and provides fine, solid wood . The yield is early and good. The harvest time is from late October to mid-November. It is ready for consumption from December to March.
