from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sunnyside Records is an American independent label primarily for jazz , which was founded in 1982 by the French François Zalacain (* 1940). The seat is in New York City .

Before his career as a producer, Zalacain was with IBM and founded the label to bring out a duo album by pianist Harold Danko , who is his friend . Kirk Lightsey and Lee Konitz followed immediately .

The label publishes a wide variety of jazz styles, but often requisitions new releases through personal contacts with the musicians in New York who are already in the catalog. In 2003, Sunnyside 's album Brazilian Duos by singer Luciana Souza was nominated for a Grammy for best jazz vocal album . The label also releases a lot of European jazz under license in the US, especially from France (first the Ryko label in 2002 and sub-labels to Universal such as Owl ). They also put out world music and French chansons.

The label's logo is a graphic of a girl in a sailor costume with a skipping rope.

In 2013 Zalacain was honored with the Grand Prix Honorem of the Academie Charles Cros.
