Luciana Souza

Luciana Souza (born June 14, 1966 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian jazz singer and songwriter who is also active in the field of classical music.

Live and act

Souza, daughter of the poet Tereza Souza and the guitarist and bossa nova composer Walter Santos, grew up in a musical environment. She studied four years at the Brazilian University of Campinas , then at the Berklee College of Music the Bachelor's degree program in jazz composition and a master's degree at the New England Conservatory of Music completed.

Souza initially worked at Hermeto Pascoal and in this context was recognized by the APCA in 1991 as discovery of the year . She has been making her own albums since 1999. Six Souza productions have been nominated for a Grammy .

She continued to work with Danilo Pérez , Romero Lubambo , Bob Moses , Maria Schneider , the Paul Winter Consort , Kenny Werner , John Patitucci , Steve Lacy and George Garzone . She is also involved in albums by Edward Simon ( Simplicitas ), Walter Becker ( Circus Money ), Herbie Hancock ( River: The Joni Letters ) and the Duo Essence ( Shadow Dance ). Hancocks River received a Grammy.

In the field of European art music , she performed with the composer Osvaldo Golijov on the occasion of the Bach Academy 2000; she has also worked with the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the Brooklyn Philharmonic , the Los Angeles Philharmonic , the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra , the New York Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet . In 2011 and 2012, Luciana Souza gave several concerts with the hr big band . In 2011 she also worked on Ryan Truesdells Centennial - Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans . She is also a member of the MOSS vocal group with Theo Bleckmann , Peter Eldridge , Lauren Kinhan and Kate McGarry , with whom she released an album in 2008.

Souza taught at the Manhattan School of Music for several years . She is married to musician and producer Larry Klein and lives in New York City .
