Osvaldo Golijov
Osvaldo Golijov (born December 5, 1960 in La Plata ) is an Argentine composer of Eastern European, Jewish descent.
Education
After Osvaldo Golijov had studied piano at the Conservatory in La Plata and composition with Gerardo Gandini , he went to Israel in 1983 . In Jerusalem he studied with Mark Kopytman at the Rubin Academy and immersed himself in the contrasting musical traditions of this city. In 1986 he settled in the United States to do his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. He studied there with George Crumb and was a scholarship holder of Oliver Knussen in Tanglewood .
Career
In the early 1990s, Golijov began working closely with two string quartets: the St Lawrence String Quartet and the Kronos Quartet . On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the cooperation between Osvaldo Golijov and the St Lawrence String Quartet, EMI released “Yiddishbbuk” in 2002, a Grammy-nominated CD of Golijov's chamber music. The Kronos Quartet released three recordings of projects with Golijov: "The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind", "Caravan" and "Nuevo". The composer also worked with the Romanian gypsy band Taraf de Haïdouks , the Mexican rock group Café Tacuba , the tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and the Argentinian composer, guitarist and producer Gustavo Santaolalla . For the singer Dawn Upshaw he composed “Three Songs for Soprano and Orchestra”, the opera “Ainadamar”, the cycle “Ayre” and arrangements of folk songs. Osvaldo Golijov celebrated great success with the world premiere of “Mark's Passion” (La Pasión según San Marcos) in 2000. The work was commissioned by Helmuth Rilling to mark the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death for the European Music Festival . The recording of the world premiere, which was released on CD by Hänssler, was nominated for a Grammy and a Latin Grammy in 2002. For the world premiere of Ayre, Golijov founded another ensemble: “The Andalucian Dogs”. This performed the work together with Dawn Upshaw in the Zankel Hall and recorded it for Deutsche Grammophon . The recording was released in January 2006 and won a Gramophone Award and a Grammy in 2007 . Osvaldo Golijov has received numerous commissions from renowned ensembles and institutions in the USA and Europe. His many awards include a MacArthur Fellowship . Osvaldo Golijov is composer in residence at numerous festivals and orchestras (Chicago Symphony Orchestra for the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons, Spoleto Festival, the “Music Alive” series of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Marlboro and Ravinia festivals etc.). The composer is currently Associate Professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he has taught since 1991, and is a member of the faculty at the Boston Conservatory.
