The Man Who Cried ( The Man Who Cried ) is a French-British film drama by Sally Potter from the year 2000 .

Suzie's father moves from Russia to the USA. The girl follows him, but remains en route in London , where she grows up with a family.

As a grown woman, Suzie appears as a dancer and singer in a Parisian revue troupe, where she finds a real friend in the dancer Lola. Lola longs for love and a home and believes she can find this in the vain and opportunistic opera singer Dante Domino. Meanwhile learns Suzie in Paris know the gypsy Cesar, with whom she begins a relationship. The German troops occupy the city in June 1940 during World War II . A singer threatens the couple to hand them over to the occupiers. With the invasion of the Nazis , the friends are faced with the ruins of their existence; everyone has to decide which side they are on. Cesar, the silent gypsy, wants to defend his family against the Nazis, even though he is heartbroken when saying goodbye to Suzie. So Suzie leaves her Cesar to start a new life in America. The ship is sinking, but Suzie can save herself. In the end, she finally meets her father again.

Sally Potter was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival in 2000 . Cate Blanchett won the National Board of Review Award in 2001, the Chlotrudis Award and the Florida Film Critics Circle Award in 2002 . Osvaldo Golijov was nominated for the World Soundtrack Award in 2001.

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
