action

Ginger and Rosa lived in London in the early 1960s and are inseparable. It was during this period that the tumult of the Cold War and the excitement of the sexual revolution clash in London . Both teenagers openly rebel against their families and don't want to end up like their mothers, whom they only despise. Ginger and Rosa smoke, skip school and dream of an exciting life, but Ginger's mother Natalie, who is frustrated with her own life, wants to end the friendship between the two. Natalie thinks that Rosa is a bad influence on her daughter. But the two friends stick together, even as Ginger became more and more politically active and even began to write about the political situation of the Cold War. But when Rosa finally begins an affair with Ginger's father, their deep friendship no longer seems to be able to withstand this pressure.

"A drama about friendship, a coming-of-age film, a portrait of the time: this wonderful film with its images that express more than words does not fit into any drawer."

- Christoph Seemann : TV Movie

"This film is pretty brutal, but it's wonderfully played by Elle Fanning, Christina Hendricks, Alice Englert and the twisting Alessandro Nivola."

- ME Russell : Portland Oregonian

“Mrs. Fanning, who is younger than her film character, plays it with composure, intensity and technical precision. Her performance is terrifying and it's hard to imagine what she couldn't play. "

- AO Scott : The New York Times

“ Ginger & Rosa is a long way from the ethereal ease and musicality with which earlier Potter films such as Yes or Orlando compensated for their propensity for theses. It's like loading 85 minutes of moral and dramatic baggage without really knowing where to put it. "

- Maurice Lahde : Critic.de

“The coming-of-age story by director Sally Potter focuses on the two main characters and their environment, which is brief but expressive. The young actresses Elle Fanning and Alice Englert deliver a grandiose performance that is convincing at every moment and is captured by the camera in powerful images. The atmosphere of the sixties is underlined by subtle jazz music (including 'Take Five' and 'Apache') and underpinned by political and philosophical conversations between the two girls and Ginger's diary notes. [...] A film that is absolutely worth seeing, not just for older girls and their parents. "
