John Turturro (2015)

John Michael Turturro (born February 28, 1957 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American actor , director and screenwriter .

Life & Career

His mother, Katherine Turturro, an amateur jazz singer, worked on a Navy base during World War II. His father Nicholas Turturro, who worked as a carpenter and construction worker, was a Navy soldier on D-Day in Normandy. John was raised Catholic by his parents ; his mother was born in Sicily and his father in Apulia . When he was six years old, his family moved to Rosedale, a borough of Queens , New York .

Turturro studied drama at the State University of New York , he completed his studies as a Master of Fine Arts at the Yale School of Drama . His brother Nicholas Turturro and cousin Aida Turturro are also actors. His other brother, Ralph Turturro, is a middle school art teacher.

He got his first small role in Martin Scorsese's film Like a Wild Bull . His regular collaborations with Spike Lee , Adam Sandler , Joel Coen and Ethan Coen are best known . In 1991 he was named Best Actor at the Cannes International Film Festival for his role in Barton Fink .

He made his debut as a film director and screenwriter with the film Mac , for which he was awarded the Golden Camera at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival . Further directorial work followed, most recently in 2019 with The Jesus Rolls, a spin-off for The Big Lebowski .

John Turturro is married to the actress Katherine Borowitz and has two children (* 1990 and * 2000).
