action
Joe Gower, a librarian at the New York Public Library , is dissatisfied with his life. His boss bullies him, his girlfriend leaves him. Abe Washington, a policeman who is friends with Gower, asks him to stand in for him during a rehearsal for a dance show the police are organizing for charity.
Gower agrees and meets the police officer Rachel Wareham during the rehearsal. Posing as a police officer, he helps Wareham prosecute a criminal they both happen to be involved in. Gower takes part in further rehearsals to get to know Wareham better. He is chosen as the solo dancer around whom the show should be built. Meanwhile, his friend warns him of the consequences of falsely posing as a police officer.
Gower gets into a bank robbery in police uniform. The police surround the building. Gower distracts the robber's attention with a few dance steps and overwhelms him. In the last scene you can see him on the show.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of April 11, 1986 that he found the characters particularly likeable. The plot is "more sophisticated" than in most comedies and offers "small glimpses into human nature" . It does contain predictable elements that were borrowed from the other films - but these would appear "surprisingly original" . The chemistry between the main actors is strong; Meg Tilly seems "10 times or 20 times more interesting" than in Agnes - Angels in Fire , for which film she received an Oscar nomination.
Film-Dienst wrote that the film was a "likeable mix-up comedy with good performance, which in a few moments exuded something of the charm of old Capra or Lubitsch comedies" .
backgrounds
The film was shot in New York City . It grossed approximately $ 4.8 million in US cinemas .
