Agnes - Angel in the Fire ( Agnes of God ) is an American film drama by Norman Jewison from the year 1985 . The script written by John Pielmeier is based on his play Lamm Gottes (original title: Agnes of God ).

action

A dead baby is found in the cell of the young nun Agnes, who lives in a secluded convent near Montreal . However, the nun cannot remember the pregnancy, the birth, or whether she killed the baby. It is also unclear who could have conceived the child, as the nuns live in the cloister of a monastery and the spiritual is a very old priest. The psychologist Martha Livingston examines the background of the case: she asks in detail above all the superior, the spiritual director of the monastery and also Agnes herself. She is the niece of mother Miriam Ruth, who runs the monastery, and has lived in the convent since her youth . The case becomes more and more mysterious when the wounds of Christ appear and bleed profusely in Sister Agnes in Livingston's presence . Half against her will, Livingston, a renegade Catholic, is fascinated by Agnes and the hidden lives of the nuns.

Although church representatives as well as their superiors are pushing for the investigation to be completed quickly, Livingston wants to come as close as possible to the truth. Under hypnotic regression, to which the superior finally gives her consent, Agnes finally reveals that she killed the child in the affect after its birth, since she believed it to be a "mistake" of God. How the child came about, who might have been its father, remains open, the attempts at explanation are arrested by mysticism . Agnes, exonerated from the charge of murder, is able to continue her life in the monastery.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of September 13, 1985 that it may be impossible to reproduce the style of the play in the film. The film cuts ethical and philosophical issues that are further ignored, which makes it “confusing” (“This is a very badly confused movie”). The representations are "as good as it is possible under these circumstances".

The lexicon of international films wrote: "The dialog-rich confrontation between religion and psychology, faith and science is too eager to please everyone, and in the effect-conscious staging mainly provides reasons for the acting profiling of the actresses."

Awards

The film was nominated for an Oscar in 1986 in three categories : Anne Bancroft for Best Actress , Meg Tilly for Best Supporting Actress and Georges Delerue for Best Score . Meg Tilly won in 1986 as Best Supporting Actress the Golden Globe Award , Anne Bancroft was nominated for the Golden Globe. John Pielmeier was nominated for the 1986 Writers Guild of America Award .
