Gaily, Gaily (Alternative title: Heat in Chicago ) is an American comedy film from the year 1969 . Directed by Norman Jewison , the screenplay was written by Abram S. Ginnes based on a novel by Ben Hecht .

Ben Harvey left his hometown in 1910 and moved to Chicago . There his cash is stolen. Harvey meets Lil, the owner of a brothel, who introduces him to members of the upper class. He becomes a successful journalist.

Film-Dienst wrote that the film was "a rich in time and local color, but not very subtle and often flat satire on profiteering, moral hypocrisy and American climber mentality" . The evangelical film observer also judges rather negatively: "The film, which was obviously planned as a parody of ancient American puritanism, only reaches its goal towards the end and offers moderate entertainment until then."

Awards

The film was nominated for an Oscar in 1970 for Best Production Design , Best Costume Design ( Ray Aghayan ) and Best Sound . Abram S. Ginnes was nominated for the 1970 Writers Guild of America Award .
