Brian Keith ; actually Robert Keith Richey, Jr. (* 14. November 1921 in Bayonne , New Jersey ; † 24. June 1997 in Malibu , Los Angeles , California ) was an American theater -, film - and television - actor .

Life

Brian Keith was born to actor Robert Keith and stage actress Helena Shipman (born in Aberdeen, Washington). Keith made his acting debut at the age of three in the 1924 silent film Pied Piper Malone . After high school , he joined the US Marines . He served as a gunner on a Douglas SBD in the US Navy between 1942 and 1945 during World War II and received an Air Medal for his services .

After the war he became a stage actor and moved into television and film in the late 1940s. Keith was a formidable actor who played supporting roles for many years. He became known worldwide in a number of Walt Disney films from the beginning of the 1960s - he was soon one of the most important stars of the studio, later especially in the role of Uncle Bill in the series Dear Uncle Bill ( Family Affairs , 1966–1971) and as a retired judge in the Hardcastle & McCormick series . In 1968 he was seen alongside Doris Day in their last movie The Man in Mammi's Bed .

In some productions he is also listed under his full name Brian Robert Keith.

Keith was married three times, first with the actress Frances Helm , then from 1954 with the actress Judy Landon and finally from 1970 with the actress Victoria Young . He had two children with Landon (Michael and Mimi) and adopted three others with her (Barbra, Betty and Rory). The marriage to Young also had two children (David and Daisy).

Brian Keith, who was a heavy smoker for a long time, suffered from emphysema and lung cancer , and underwent chemotherapy . As a result of his serious illness and depression caused by the suicide of his 27-year-old daughter Daisy in April 1997, Keith committed suicide in June of that year by shooting himself with a rifle. Brian Keith was buried next to his daughter in Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. In 2008 Keith received a star posthumously on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
