Announce Her Parents' Wedding (Original: The Parent Trap ) is an American comedy from 1961 . The film from the Disney studios is an American adaptation of the Erich Kästner novel Das doppelte Lottchen . Directed by David Swift , the main roles are played by Hayley Mills in a double role.
plot
The 13-year-old Hedy (originally Sharon) spends her vacation at the "Camp Inch" holiday camp. Here she meets Susi, who is the same age and looks very similar to her. The two girls are crazy enemies and play malicious pranks on each other - as a punishment they have to spend the rest of their vacation together in a camp hut. Here they discover that they are twins who have been separated from their divorced parents: Hedy grew up with her mother in Boston and Susi with her father in Monterey , California . Indignant about the breakdown of the family, Hedy and Susi plan to swap places after the holidays, with the intention of reuniting their parents when they swap back later. After meticulous preparations, Susi goes to Boston as Hedy, and Hedy to California as Susi.
Turbulent situations arise as the girls immerse themselves in their new lives - it gets especially tricky for Hedy in California when she learns that her father Mitch is planning to marry the young woman Vicky - although she is more likely to use Mitch's bank account than his Love is interested.
Meanwhile, Susi reveals the secret of her identity in Boston. Her mother Maggie takes her to California, where she meets her divorced husband for the first time in many years. Contrary to the idea of the twins, this encounter is anything but harmonious - especially since the appearance of the ex-wife does not exactly fit into Mitch and Vicky's wedding preparations.
As a last resort, Hedy and Susi take advantage of the fact that they are twins, because not even their parents can tell them apart. They force a camping trip into the mountains, where they scare Vicky away with all sorts of pranks.
After returning home to the local farm, Mitch realizes that he still loves Maggie. So the twins' plan still works.

In this film, the yellow screen process developed by Disney Studios was used for the first time for the trick shots . The principle is comparable to the blue screen technology , which was not yet fully developed at the time. This method was also clearly superior to the technology that was common at the time, combining two pieces of image information by means of rear projection , which justified the higher costs for development and use. With the rapid progress in the development of alternative techniques, this method, which was unrivaled until the 1970s, lost its importance.

25 years after its premiere, The Parent Trap continued with a number of television films:
1986 Parent Trap II (German title: Nikki und Mary - Die 5-Minuten-Ehe ), 1989 Parent Trap III (German title Ein Zwilling rarely comes alone ; not to be confused with the remake of the same name) and also 1989 Parent Trap IV: Hawaiian Honeymoon (German title: Honeymoon in Hawaii ). In all sequels, Hayley Mills appeared again as Sharon and Susan in front of the camera. In the German versions of the television films, the twins kept their American names Sharon and Susan, unlike in the dubbed version of The Marriage of their Parents . The last two films in the series are about Susan's relationship with her new husband ( Barry Bostwick ), who is the father of triplets. In terms of content, there is no longer any connection to the template by Erich Kästner .
