Cathleen Nesbitt (born November 24, 1888 in Cheshire , England , † August 2, 1982 in London , England) was a British actress of Welsh and Irish descent.

Life

Cathleen Nesbitt was educated in France . She then attended the Queen's University of Belfast and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris , France.

She first appeared on the London stages in 1910 in the revival of Pineros The Cabinet Minister . Then she played in other plays. In 1911, Nesbitt joined the Irish Players and went to the United States , where she made her Broadway debut in The Well of the Saints . With the Irish Players she also played in John Millington Synges The Playboy of the Western World . The actors were pelted with vegetables and fruits by the predominantly Catholic, Irish-American audience.

In 1912 she became the love of the English poet Rupert Brooke , who dedicated many love poems to her. When Brooke died in World War I , he and Nesbitt were engaged and they wanted to get married. She made her film debut in 1919 in A Star Over Night . She also played in The Faithful Heart in 1922 . She didn't appear in films until 1930, when she got the role of Anne Lymes in Canaries Sometimes Sing , one of the first sound films. In 1938 she starred in the film version of Pygmalion .

Nesbitt's first Hollywood film was Three Coins in the Fountain (1954), in which she played the character role of "La Principessa". This was followed by Black Widow in the same year and An Affair to Remember in 1957 . She also appeared in The Parent Trap (1961) and Promise Her Anything (1965). In 1972 and 1973 she starred in two episodes of Das Haus am Eaton Place . In 1974 Nesbitt received an Emmy Award for her role in the drama Staircase . Other Hollywood and television productions include Hitchcock's Family Plot (1976) and Julia (1977).

Cathleen Nesbitt was married to actor Cecil Ramage from 1920 until her death in 1982. At this point, however, they had been living apart for several years. They had two children. Nesbitt lived in the United States for a long time and also considered accepting American citizenship . Eventually she returned to Great Britain , where she was beaten Commander of the British Empire .

Her autobiography A Little Love and Good Company was published in 1973.

After a career that lasted over 80 years, one of the longest in show business, Cathleen Nesbitt died in London at the age of 93.
