William Henry Monk

William Henry Monk (born March 16, 1823 in London , † March 1, 1889 ibid) was an English Anglican organist, choirmaster and music professor as well as editor and composer of hymns.

Life

Monk studied music with Thomas Adams , JA Hamilton and GA Griesbach. From 1841 he was organist and choir director at various churches in Greater London , and from 1851 at the same time professor of music at several academic institutions in London, Edinburgh and Manchester. He was one of the leading church musicians and music theorists of the Anglo-Catholic Oxford movement .

In 1861 he published the hymn collection Hymns Ancient and Modern for Use in the Services of the Church , which saw new editions and expansions for decades and was the most important hymn book of the Church of England. It also includes his own melodies, some of which are still among the best known in the English-speaking world. 1882 awarded him Durham University the honorary doctorate of music.

William Henry Monk was buried in London's Highgate Cemetery . The memorial cross was financed by public donations.

Monk's tune Eventide ? / i to Henry Francis Lyte's text Abide with me is familiar to every British person to this day as an evening and death song . It can be heard at funerals and other occasions of the royal family, at the military commemorations of the Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall and ANZAC Day , but also every year at the start of the FA Cup final and in numerous movie scenes. The German hymns Stay with me, Lord ( Evangelical Hymn book 488), Stay with us, Lord ( God's praise 94) and Stay with us (God's praise 325) are sung according to Monk's melody.
