Bogus is an American comedy film of Norman Jewison from the year 1996 .

action

Lorraine Franklin is an artist in the circus company Circus Phantastique . She is raising her seven-year-old son Albert, whose father is replaced by her colleague Antoine.

When Lorraine dies in an accident, Harriet Franklin, Lorraine's adoptive sister, takes Albert's upbringing. Harriet is a New Jersey-based businesswoman who doesn't get on well with children at all. Albert would actually much rather stay with the circus troupe and makes it even more difficult for Harriet with his dismissive behavior. While Albert is sitting on the plane rather sullenly and drawing, his picture suddenly starts talking to him. Little by little, the adult Frenchman Bogus develops from the image. The tall man with the big nose and long coat is at Albert's side with words and deeds, making life a little easier for him. However, Albert is the only one who can see and hear Bogus. Harriet and Albert's new teacher soon worry because Albert "apparently" is talking to himself. As the film progresses, Albert begins to accept Harriet, and Harriet in turn remembers what it was like to be a child. In the end, Harriet and Albert visit Albert's mother's grave together. Bogus watches from a distance and explains that the children always forget him as soon as they are happy again, so they no longer need him. But that's a good thing.
