Sheryl Lee Ralph (born December 30, 1956 in Waterbury , Connecticut ) is an American actress and singer .

Life

Ralph grew up in Mandeville and Long Island as the daughter of an African American and a Jamaican . In 1973 she was elected Miss Black Teen-age New York . At the age of 19, Ralph was the youngest woman to graduate from Rutgers University . That same year she was named one of the top ten students in the US by Glamor magazine . At first, Sheryl wanted to be a doctor, but chose the arts. From 1990 to 2001 Ralph was married to Eric Maurice with whom she has a son and a daughter. She has been married to Pennsylvania Senator Vincent Hughes since 2005 . In June 2000, she sued the National Enquirer for $ 1 million over an article published about her and her husband.

Career

Ralph began her career as a stage actress, where she was nominated for a 1982 Tony Award for Best Actress in the Musical for her role as Deena Jones in Dreamgirls . In 1984 Sheryl Lee Ralph released her debut album, In the Evening , the single of the same name of the same name reached # 6 on the Billboard charts . In 1988 she was the voice actor for Rita in the Disney film production company Oliver & Company . Her first leading role was as Denzel Washington's wife in Big Bad Man . In 1992 she had another leading role as Mistress in the film of the same name with Robert De Niro '. She played other roles in the 1990s in television series such as The Flintstones , Deterrence and Unconditional Love .

On television, she is best known for her roles as Etienne Toussaint-Bouvier on Designing Women , as Dee Mitchell on Moesha, and as comedy villain Cheetah in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited . Ralph hosted Divas Simply Singing to raise funds against AIDS . In Barbershop - The series , she played the popular trans woman Claire. In 2006 she made a guest appearance in Emergency Room . In 2008 she played a supporting role in the television hit Hannah Montana (with Miley Cyrus, among others ). In 2009 she played the role of Elyse in the Broadway musical The First Wives Club .
