The Eurythmics are a British pop - duo , which published from 1981 to 1999 and was successful albums in the charts. So far it has sold around 80 million records worldwide.
history
The band consisted or consists of the two members Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart , who were initially also privately linked. After playing together in the bands The Catch and The Tourists , they founded the Eurythmics in 1980.
The name is an allusion to the rhythmic education according to Émile Jaques-Dalcroze , which Annie Lennox enjoyed in her childhood. In the fall of 1981 released debut album In the Garden , which contained pieces with members of Can , DAF (German-American friendship) and Blondie , only sold moderately.
In early 1983, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) was followed by the second album, which became a commercial success. The singles Love Is a Stranger and Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) contained therein developed into international successes.
The album Touch followed at the end of 1983 ; the singles Who's That Girl? , Right by Your Side and Here Comes the Rain Again continued the initial success. In autumn 1984, the Eurythmics provided the soundtrack to Michael Radford's film adaptation of George Orwell's dystopia 1984 . The sex crime released as a single (Nineteen Eighty-Four) rose to number three in the German single charts.
The long-playing record Be Yourself Tonight , released in spring 1985, contains duets with Aretha Franklin ( Sisters Are Doin 'It for Themselves ) and Elvis Costello ( Adrian ). The song There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart) , on which Stevie Wonder plays the harmonica, became an international success. It's also the group's only number one hit in the UK .
The LP Revenge , released in mid-1986, contained Thorn in My Side (number five in the British charts), the duo's last single top ten hit for a long time. In the fall of 1987 the album Savage was released , which was recorded almost exclusively with synthesizers.
Stewart then worked as a producer for Tom Petty , Jon Bon Jovi and Bob Dylan , among others , while Lennox pursued an acting career. In autumn 1989 the album We Too Are One was released , which reached number one in the UK charts , but was otherwise less successful. The duo then declared their collaboration "ended for the time being".
In the spring of 1992 Lennox released her first solo album with Diva . Stewart wrote some soundtracks (including Lily Was Here with Candy Dulfer on saxophone) and founded the Spiritual Cowboys , with whom he released two albums (see solo careers of Lennox and Stewart ).
After a ten-year break, the two found each other again in 1999 for the album Peace . They donated the profits from the subsequent tour ( Peacetour ) to Greenpeace and Amnesty International . The album and single, I Saved the World Today, sold well. From 2000, Lennox and Stewart went their separate ways artistically.
In November 2005, the band released the Ultimate Collection, a second compilation of their hits. In addition to the familiar, this contains two new titles, including the single I've Got a Life , which held number one in the US Billboard Dance Charts for several weeks and, as a result, made it into many European club charts. At the same time, the band's entire catalog appeared in improved sound quality and with additional, partly unreleased pieces.
Annie Lennox said in 2009 that there would be no more eurythmics reunification. Contrary to this statement, the duo performed on February 9, 2014 at the tribute concert The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles with the Beatles song The Fool on the Hill in Los Angeles . Dave Stewart emphasized in several interviews that the band was never officially dissolved. On December 9, 2019, he and Lennox performed together at a benefit concert in New York and played several songs, including Sweet Dreams .
