Text and style of music

The lyrics of the song are about an unrequited love. Lennox was inspired by the fact that she was unhappily in love at the time. During the recording of the song, the pieces ABC Freeform and You Take Some Lentils ... And You Take Some Rice , which were later released as the B-side of the single , were created . Both titles are extraordinary pieces for the band. ABC Freeform is based on a simple rhythm to which Julian Stewart, Dave Stewart's stepfather, recites the alphabet twice in French in a tearful voice . The song You Take Some Lentils ... And You Take Some Rice is a mixture of electronic squeaks and dissonant tones over a simple beat. A voice whose origins are no longer known recites an anecdote about a crazy recipe with carbohydrates .

The song is characterized as a ballad . It is based on a pseudo- symphonic synthesizer melody in which purely electronic sounds are combined with haunting synthesizers that play the epic melody. Annie Lennox's singing is gentle and seductive. The song begins with a slow rhythm that increases before the chorus . The piece ends with a fuzzy guitar effect that fades in and out during the fadeout .

Music video

At the beginning of the video, Annie Lennox appears as a singer in a nightclub , wearing a blonde 1960s wig and singing the song. In the audience sits David A. Stewart, who flirts with various women and is busy with a drinking binge . The women include Hazel O'Connor , Kiki Dee and Siobhan Fahey . The latter was Stewart's future second wife.
