The album version was released as a single in November, with I Did It Just the Same on the B-side . A maxi single with a 7:55 minute version was also released. In 1985, Virgin Records released a maxi CD that contained a 6:35 minute maxi version of Julia in addition to the long version of Sexcrime . In 1988, all the remixes released on record in 1984 were also released on CD.
While the single became a commercial success in Europe, it failed to live up to expectations in the US market as most major radio stations refused to play the song because of its "disreputable content".
