The Tourists was a British pop - and New Wave - band that existed from 1977 to 1980 and was successful almost exclusively in the home.

Band history

The guitarists David A. Stewart and Peet Coombes founded a trio called "The Catch" with the singer Annie Lennox in 1975 (not identical to the duo of the same name , which became known through the title 25 Years ) and released the single Borderline / Black Blood on the label Logo Records. After bassist Eddie Chin and drummer Jim Toomey joined in 1977 , the band changed their name to "The Tourists" and produced three albums and several singles.

The group had their first chart success in the summer of 1979, when the single Blind Among the Flowers rose to number 52 in the UK charts . While the accompanying album The Tourists was only moderately successful at number 72 in the UK, the second release The Loneliest Man in the World was more popular and came in at number 32.

In November 1979 the song I Only Want to Be with You , originally a hit for Dusty Springfield in 1963, achieved the final breakthrough. The single climbed to number 4 on the British charts, the album Reality Effect , which was released almost at the same time, made it to number 23. The second release So Good to Be Back Home Again became a top 10 hit in February 1980 at number 8.

After that, the group's success subsided. The album Luminous Basement and the release Don't Say I Told You So had to be content with lower chart ranks, which is why the band split in late 1980. Lennox and Stewart were active as eurythmics with great success from 1981 and became known worldwide. Coombes and Chin formed a project called "Acid Drops".
