Quote
“Whatever gender and social class they belong to, the best Sargent characters are those who overcome the limits of their intellectual passivity and become active people who take a stand and don't just nod their heads in response to injustice. The patriarchal upper class in breakfast with her , who ponders the exploitation of the workers through republican politics with a maid , is shown as a hypocrite; Julia [from: Julia ], who gives up her privileged family relationships in order to become politically active and pays for it with her life, portrays the heroine. It is the opposing personalities of these characters that reflect Sargent's exact creative sensibilities. "
