Göltzschtal marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Göltzschtal Marathon is a marathon that has been organized annually since 1968 in the Saxon town of Lengenfeld (Vogtland) by VfB Lengenfeld in 1908 . Up to and including 2013, the marathon was held in October, since 2014 it has been held in April and thus merged with the Göltzschtallauf, which has also been held annually in April. It is the oldest marathon still being held in the former GDR and the second oldest in Germany. He registered his highest number of participants in 1987 with a total of 278 runners who reached the finish (258 men, 20 women). In recent years, the number of participants has fallen below 100 (as of 2007).

A marathon pair race (two-person relay) has also been held since 2000.

history

The first run was held on September 29, 1968 out of the practical consideration that the poor condition of the track and field of the athletics club did not allow long-distance events. In this competition, 27 out of 47 runners reached the finish. After the first two events in 1968 and 1969 there was no continuation for two years (but since 1969 a Göltzschtallauf over 25 km). The Göltzschtal Marathon has been held continuously since 1972 and under the same overall director (Reiner Milek, * 1943).

In 1973 a woman officially ran a marathon in the GDR for the first time, so that Rosemarie Pfeifer's (Leipzig, * 1938) winning time of 4:01:28 hours was the first GDR best (world best time at this point: 2:46:36 hours ., see under marathon ).

The overall winners of the run include the four-time winner of the GDR cult event Rennsteiglauf , Dietmar Knies (* 1951) and Sigrid Eichner (* 1940), who ran a marathon more than 1000 times. Two runners achieved a four-time victory, Jürgen Schramm (* 1960) in 1986 and 1989 to 1991 and Uwe Friedrich (* 1972) in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2003.

The record number of participants in 1987 was due to the implementation of the so-called Small GDR Championship as part of the Göltzschtal Marathon - a championship for amateur athletes outside the state-sponsored sports clubs.

Even older than the Gölztschtal Marathon was the Karl-Marx-Stadt-Marathon in the GDR , which was first held in what is now Chemnitz on May 7, 1967, but was no longer held after 1987.

One week after the first Göltzschtal Marathon, the Black Forest Marathon took place for the first time on October 6, 1968 . The oldest continuous marathon event in Germany is the Essen Marathon Around the Baldeneysee (since 1963).

Routing

The first events began and ended in front of the town hall of Lengenfeld . For many years, the route led through the valley of the Göltzsch river on a road with little traffic, which was not fully blocked during the marathon, to a turning point about ten kilometers away at the entrance to Mylau . This commute had to be run twice. Since 2006, the route has been on a cycle path that is similar to the old route.
