The Göltzsch is an approximately 40 kilometer long tributary of the White Elster in Vogtland .

course

Weisse Göltzsch in Grünbach , shortly before the Falkenstein dam

The Göltzsch has two spring arms, the longer White Göltzsch and the Rote Göltzsch. Both arise in moored troughs around 700 meters above sea level in the Grüner Wald forest north of Hammerbrücke in the Erzgebirge / Vogtland Nature Park .

The more western Weisse Göltzsch comes from the so-called Göltzschsprenge and absorbs water from the Zwickau Mulde in the Hammerbrücker district Rissbrücke . This is brought about via a raft ditch and at its end via the artificial waterfalls Rissfalls . The White Göltzsch is now entering the Upper Göltzschtal nature reserve . A steep-walled valley has formed here. At its end at the town of Falkenstein / Vogtl. the river to the Falkenstein dam is dammed. The community of Ellefeld , which follows downstream , was built for 2 km along the water.

The Rote Göltzsch rises immediately west of the Jägersgrün-Beerheide road. At Beerheide , the stream cuts through a quartz train so that rocks are visible on both sides of the valley. The most striking is the 25-meter-high Röthelstein with a viewpoint. At its foot, directly on the Roten Göltzsch, is the Röthelstein natural stage .

On the northern outskirts of Ellefeld, the White and Red Göltzsch unite at a height of 485.8 meters above sea level to form the Göltzsch . This now flows through the cities of Auerbach / Vogtl. and Rodewisch , who together with Falkenstein and Ellefeld have already grown together to form a settlement area. The next town in the Göltzschtal is Lengenfeld , where the direction of flow changes from north to northwest. At the village of Weißensand, the federal motorway 72 crosses the valley via the Weißensand Göltzschtal bridge at a height of 35 meters . We continue past the Schotenmühle to Mühlwand near Rotschau . This is followed by Mylau and Netzschkau as well as the famous railway bridge Göltzschtalbrücke of the Saxon-Bavarian Railway , the largest brick bridge in the world and landmark of the Vogtland. In the further course the Göltzsch forms the state border between Saxony and Thuringia in a rocky, almost gorge-like valley , before it flows into the White Elster in the south of the Thuringian district town of Greiz at an altitude of approx .

Gold deposits

At various points in the Göltzsch, gold deposits were previously searched for in three historical stages and this precious metal was also extracted through elaborate gold washing, the so-called gold soap . From the different times of this soapy gold mining there are still some hills of overburden rubble, which have not been leveled by agriculture, on the banks , which are known as Raithalden . Nowadays, hobby gold punters occasionally succeed in washing out small gold tinsel in a size between 0.1 and 2 mm in some places .

Whether the name of the river is derived solely from the Old Sorbian Goliza and thus means "Heidewaldbach" is partly controversial. Because, on the other hand, it is also assumed that the word gold plays a role in the name formation of this flowing water .

additional

Between Falkenstein and Lengenfeld, part of the Zwickau – Falkenstein railway runs on the left side of the Göltzsch valley slope . The Lengenfeld – Göltzschtalbrücke railway line once followed the course of the Göltzsch after Lengenfeld . However, the route was closed from 1967. Today the Göltzschtal cycle path exists on parts of the former railway embankment.
