Starting line-up for the innogy Marathon 2016 at Baldeneysee in Essen

Around the Baldeneysee is a nationally known, since 1963 without interruption on Baldeneysee in Essen be transmitted Marathon , which takes place annually in October on the second Sunday. This makes it the oldest marathon in Germany that has been held without interruption to this day. The organizer is the sports club TUSEM Essen , with the lead organization being taken over by the athletics department. The marathon is carried out exclusively on a voluntary basis and is therefore one of the few fully club-sponsored events of this size in Germany. The event organizer is Gerd Zachäus from TUSEM Essen.

history

Until a few years ago the race was officially called the Tusem Marathon , but then renamed the Essen Marathon to give it a better national profile compared to competing events such as the much larger Ruhr Marathon . The name Tusem Marathon is still a common term in the running scene. The energy supplier RWE has been a name sponsor since 2006, and the official title has been innogy Marathon - Around Lake Baldeney since 2016 .

In 1974, when women took part for the first time, Christa Vahlensieck achieved a world best time of 2:42:38 h, which was not recognized, however, as the distance turned out to be too short after a re-measurement.

Until 1980 a commuter route was run on the Hardenbergufer on the south side of the Baldeneysee. Since 1981 the route, measured according to the guidelines of DLV and AIMS, has been running twice around the Baldeneysee with an additional turning loop in the first lap. The moderate temperatures in early autumn, the well-developed bike paths and the flat profile allow for fast times.

In the beginning of 1963 there were 50 runners. Today the run is limited to a total of 3,000 participants in order to avoid obstacles when lapping due to the limited space on the route.

Since 2003, the walking and Nordic walking event Walking Day has been held the day before the marathon . After around 300 starters in their first year, around 900 walkers and Nordic walkers were on the road in 2007. Due to the high attendance, the event was presented for the first time in 2008 by a separate sponsor. Compared to the marathon, the longest walking route only runs once around the Baldeneysee and is 14 kilometers long. Walking distances of 4.5 km and 8.5 km are also offered. The start is made in two waves, with the average faster walkers being sent out on the track in advance. A few minutes later the Nordic walkers follow.
