Ruhr marathon
The Ruhrmarathon (official name after the sponsor Karstadt Karstadt RuhrMarathon , since 2007 Karstadt-Marathon , from 2013 Vivawest-Marathon ) is a marathon that has been taking place in the central and eastern Ruhr area on a point-to-point route since 2003 and from 2009 is organized by MMP Veranstaltungsund Vermarktungs GmbH .
In 2005, the Ruhrmarathon was first held as a twin marathon . At the same time, a marathon will be started at two different locations. Both runs are brought together and end in a common goal. The scoring and timing of the marathons are carried out separately.
The following disciplines were offered in 2009: a marathon each from Dortmund and Oberhausen to Essen , a marathon for inline skaters and handbikers on the second route, on both routes a relay marathon for teams of five or teams of six in student teams, and a half marathon from Gelsenkirchen after eating.
As a result of Arcandor AG's insolvency proceedings , the sponsorship contract with Karstadt was terminated, so that no Ruhr marathon took place between 2010 and 2012. In 2006 the run was canceled due to a lack of sponsors.
Since 2013, the marathon has been held again as the VivaWest marathon with a new sponsor.
history
The first Ruhr marathon started in 2003 in Bochum- Wattenscheid via Bochum city center, along the Zeche Zollern , which was the goal of the half marathon, to Dortmund city center, where the goal was the new Karstadt-Sport-Haus in Hansa-Carré. The following year, the Ruhr Marathon ran from Provinzialstraße in Dortmund-Lütgendortmund via Bochum, Herne (the goal of the half marathon) and Gelsenkirchen to Essen . The route led through the Opel factory in Bochum .
The third Ruhr marathon was a twin marathon (or twin run or Y run ). The west route started in Oberhausen and led via Bottrop , Gladbeck and Gelsenkirchen-Buer (finish of the half marathon) to Gelsenkirchen to the Come-Together-Point, the east route started in Dortmund-Lütgendortmund and, as in the previous year, led via Bochum and Herne ( Goal of the half marathon) to Gelsenkirchen to the Come-Together-Point. From this point the route led together to the goal in Essen. Another innovation this year was the start of the elite runners in Dortmund, who were given a target of 20 minutes before the male elite starting in Oberhausen and competed with them for an additional bonus for the first runner to arrive at the finish.
In 2006 the event was canceled because several sponsors had dropped out.
The fourth Ruhrmarathon took place in 2007 as a Y-run with two starting points. As in 2005, the route ran from the two starting points in Dortmund (east route) and Oberhausen (west route) to Essen. The west route began in Oberhausen and led through Bottrop, Gladbeck to Gelsenkirchen, where it came together with the east route. The east route began in Dortmund and led via Bochum and Herne to Gelsenkirchen. At the come-together point at the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen, the journey continued to Essen, where the goal was again in front of the Grugahalle this time . The target points for the respective half-marathons were in Gelsenkirchen-Buer and Herne-Mitte. In 2007 and 2008, a 10 km run from Gelsenkirchen to Essen was also offered.
At the sixth Ruhr Marathon in 2009, the route was modified so that all runners ran through the Zollverein colliery . The male and female running elite ran together again on the Dortmund route. There was only one half marathon, starting in Gelsenkirchen. The finish of all races was on Limbecker Platz in Essen.
