Rhine-Ruhr Marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rhine-Ruhr Marathon is a marathon in Duisburg that has been held since 1981. It is therefore one of the oldest city marathons in Germany. In addition to the classic 42.195-kilometer route, the competition also includes a half marathon , a marathon for inline skaters and a marathon for wheelchair users .

history

As a balance was forgiven of 8000 DM for 1981 in the sports budget of the city of Duisburg, the reported Eintracht courageously with the intention to complete a marathon on their feet. With the help of the sponsor Thyssen Bautechnik , it was possible to run the run as a city marathon, which ran clockwise through twelve districts - the second in Germany after the Frankfurt Marathon , which premiered in the spring of the same year. The then Lord Mayor Josef Krings personally gave the starting shot for the debut event on September 19, 1981 in the Duisburg Sports Park . With 385 participants at the finish line, they lagged behind Frankfurt and the Berlin Marathon that started a week later, each with over 3000 participants, but led the positive response to the premiere, in addition to the four-digit number of participants in Duisburg from 1983 onwards.

In 1987 the DLV awarded its title fights to Duisburg, so that a finisher record was achieved with 3,155 runners. However, the event had now reached such an extent that it brought the organizing club Eintracht Duisburg to the limits of its capacity. A decision on the future of the run was postponed when Duisburg was awarded the contract for the Universiade in 1989 , the marathon of which was organized as part of the Rhine-Ruhr Marathon; In 1990, however, the temporary end came.

In 1991 and 1992 a second attempt was made with Eintracht Duisburg as the host and the Duisburg Werbe- und Touristik GmbH, a municipal subsidiary, as the organizer. However, the race with much larger city marathons such as the Berlin Marathon, which also takes place in September, could not be won, and so the organizers and organizers finally withdrew, so that the marathon was canceled again in 1993 and 1994.

In 1995 the Stadtsportbund Duisburg e. V. and the Lauf-Club Duisburg eV, which still organize the run today, made a fresh start with a broad sports approach. The direction of the run was changed so that it now ran counter-clockwise through town, and the appointment was moved from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning.

In 2000 the inline skater competition was added to the program, followed in 2002 by the half marathon and the wheelchair marathon.

In 1987, 2000 and 2003, the German Marathon Championships were held as part of the Rhine-Ruhr Marathon .

route

The route is a circular route. The start is on Kruppstraße in the Sportpark Duisburg , from there it goes through Neudorf to the city center . While the half marathon route turns south from here into the Dellviertel, the marathon route leads to the inner harbor and from there over the Kasslerfeld and the Ruhr to Ruhrort . After a loop through Meiderich , it goes over the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke on the left bank of the Rhine . From Alt-Homberg it goes south via Essenberg and Hochemmerich to Rheinhausen . Over the bridge of solidarity it goes back over the Rhine to Hochfeld , where the half marathon route from the north joins at km 28. Shortly thereafter, the route turns south and leads via Wanheimerort , Buchholz and Huckingen to the southernmost point of the course and then via Großenbaum and Wedau to the finish in the MSV Arena .
