Josef Krings (born October 21, 1926 in Düsseldorf ; † November 10, 2019 ) was a German educator and politician ( SPD ). From 1975 to 1997 he was Lord Mayor of Duisburg .

Life

Josef Krings was a teacher of German and history. For many years he was the director of the Broich municipal secondary school in Mülheim an der Ruhr and led the fate of the city of Duisburg for 22 years, at times parallel to his school principal work, until he was replaced by Bärbel Zieling in 1997 . During his tenure, the city underwent a tremendous structural change, some of the consequences of which have not yet been overcome.

Josef Krings had been a member of the SPD since 1957. From 1958 to 1976 he was the local club chairman of the SPD Duisburg-Duissern, from 1961 a member of the SPD sub-district executive committee and from 1980 a member of the SPD party council. In 1962 he became councilor of the city of Duisburg. From 1969 to 1974 Krings was mayor of the city of Duisburg, from 1975 honorary mayor. From 1975 he was a member of the state board of the NRW City Council. He was a co-founder of the Round of Mayors of the Ruhr Area and a member of the WDR Broadcasting Council.

From July 24, 1966 to July 25, 1970, Josef Krings was a directly elected member of the sixth state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia for the constituency 074 Duisburg III.

Krings died in November 2019 at the age of 93.

honors and awards

Krings was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia on November 6, 1997 . In 2000 he was honored with the music prize of the city of Duisburg . After leaving office, Krings was made an honorary citizen of the city of Duisburg. A bronze bust by Krings has adorned the Mercator room in Duisburg's town hall since March 2009.

He was an honorary senator of the University of Duisburg-Essen .
