Essenberg is located on the left bank of the Rhine and belongs to the Alt-Homberg district of Duisburg , which is part of the Homberg / Ruhrort / Baerl district . In the south, Essenberg is bounded by the Essenberger Bruch, which was created in a silted up old Rhine loop . The Essenberger See is a former quarry pond, which was created in the 20th century . The former municipality of Essenberg had an area of ​​2.58 km².

history

Essenberg has formed a rural community in the mayor's office of Homberg since the 19th century . This belonged to the Geldern district until 1857 and to the Moers district since 1857. With the establishment of the Rheinpreußen colliery in the 1850s and the Sachtleben chemical plant in the 1850s, Essenberg became an industrial community. On January 1, 1907, Essenberg was incorporated into the municipality of Homberg together with the municipality of Hochheide . Homberg was made a city in 1921 and part of the city of Duisburg in 1975.
