Neudorf is a district of Duisburg in the Duisburg-Mitte district . The double district has 27,194 inhabitants ( as of December 31, 2016 ) on an area of 10.71 km², consisting of the two districts Neudorf-Nord (14,300 inhabitants) and Neudorf-Süd (12,894 inhabitants).

location

The district is located directly southeast of the city center. It is framed by Wanheimerort and the Dellviertel in the west, Duissern in the north, the Duisburg city forest in the east and the districts of Wedau and Bissingheim in the south. Neudorf-Süd is traversed by the railway line of today's main line between Cologne and Hamm (former lines of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft and the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft ).

history

On the heath, between the Landwehr and the Duisburg Forest , the Friedrichsdorf , also called Op de Heid , was built in 1770 . It was founded by Frederick the Great , who gave uncultivated land to some Palatinate families on September 1, 1769. They were promised freedom to practice their religion, exemption from military service, ten years of tax exemption, housing subsidies and travel allowances. This attempt at settlement failed, however, as all colonists returned to their homeland within a few months.

On May 30, 1770, there was another influx of "colonists" to Duisburg-Neudorf with 13 families from Hesse and Darmstadt, and four more families followed by August 1770. The street name "Koloniestraße" still reminds of this settlement phase.

The twin city district had its highest population in the 1960s with almost 45,000 inhabitants.

Chapel of the old cemetery

The 30 hectare cemetery was built in 1870 and replaced the cemeteries at the Salvatorkirche , the old Duisburg city church and at today's Mercatorhalle . The tombs of the old cemeteries were put up again in different places on the newly created cemetery. The cemetery is characterized by very old trees. The center of the cemetery is adorned with a neo-Gothic brick chapel with a domed roof, built in 1874. After the severe destruction of the Second World War , the chapel was repaired and repeatedly renovated and modernized in the years that followed.

At the beginning of the 1920s, when it became apparent that what was then the main cemetery on Sternbuschweg was fully occupied, the city decided to build a new burial site. With regard to the site, a decision was made in favor of part of the Duisburg city forest on today's Düsseldorfer Strasse. After the preparation of the area, the burial began in 1923. The new cemetery was named Waldfriedhof and is alternatively also known as the New Cemetery.
