location

Beeckerwerth is located on the right bank of the Rhine in a bend in the Rhine in Duisburg. The district is connected to the left bank of the Rhine via the A 42 motorway. Werth means "island" or "peninsula". Beeckerwerth is the " Beecker Island". Until the Middle Ages, the place was completely surrounded by water: to the west and northwest of the Rhine, east and northeast of the Emscher and south of a tributary of the Emscher, the Monnarde. Until the early Middle Ages, the present-day location, at least parts of it, was still on the left side of the Rhine.

history

The Lords of Beeck, the von Stecke family, were the first to settle in Beeckerwerth in the 13th century. Here they built their Knipp estate on the Rhine . The fortified castle was first mentioned in 1292 when it was situated on the heights of a small island - a Knypp. It was the seat of jurisdiction until it was destroyed by floods in 1571. In 1620 it was rebuilt, but further inland from Beeckerwerth. The jurisdiction moved to the Kirchdorf Beeck, to whose office the farmers Beeckerwerth belonged. In 1809 the office of Beeck became French and merged with Holten to form the Beeck-Holten mayor. In 1886 the mayor's office became independent again. In 1904 Beeckerwerth was incorporated into Ruhrort together with Beeck and Laar . On October 1, 1905, Beeckerwerth became a Duisburg district through the incorporation of Ruhrort.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the industrialist August Thyssen bought most of the Beeckerwerther property, and in 1914 also Haus Knipp and its lands. The Knipp house fell victim to the 1939 Rhine dike elevation. The Haus Knipp railway bridge , built in 1912, blown up in 1945 and rebuilt in 1946, crosses the Rhine 2 km north of the demolished Knipp house.

1916 began in Beeckerwerth with the sinking of the first shaft for coal extraction . Colonies of collieries emerged and the population grew rapidly from around 100 to over 4,000 inhabitants. The local miners founded the SV Beeckerwerth sports club in 1925 . The district had the highest number of inhabitants in the early 1960s with almost 7,500 residents. In 1963 the mine in Beeckerwerth was closed.
