History and culture

For an expanded historical context, see also the history of the city of Duisburg and the history of Walsum .

Little is known about the early history of the district, but the area was only sparsely populated until the early 20th century. Nevertheless, a first settlement was built in Franconian times and was first mentioned in writing around 850. In the Middle Ages , the Hückelhoven house existed as a residence for the nobility, which was fortified according to archaeological findings and surrounded by a moat. The property disappeared over the course of history, with the last buildings remaining until 1956.

The later development is mainly due to the expansion of the mining industry, with the Walsum colliery, which operated from 1927 to 2008, was an important employer. Because of this history of development, the miners' houses make up an essential part of the development. As an example of the development of Overbruch as a residential area, a settlement was built in 1934 along the street Auf dem Röttgen . In particular, it was new buildings in the 1950s that allowed the district to grow to its present size. Mining was at times the basis of life for almost the entire population. Due to the great importance of this industry, the district has always been a stronghold of the IG Bergbau trade union, and the SPD received a high proportion of the votes in elections .

Overbruch was not an independent municipality, but belonged to the city of Walsum, which until 1974 belonged to the Dinslaken district . On January 1, 1975 it was incorporated into Duisburg.

Local infrastructure and cityscape

There is a supermarket in Overbruch. Otherwise, however, only a few retail companies are based here, as the respective focus is on Dinslaken and the nearby Vierlinden. In the district there is the Sacred Heart Church, a religious building belonging to the Catholic parish of St. Dionysius. She is also responsible for the Sacred Heart Kindergarten established in the 1950s .

The development of the last decades and the decline of mining have initiated a structural change, through which Overbruch now has a significantly above-average proportion of older residents. The district is considered to be close to nature and has a large number of green spaces. In the north, the residential area merges directly into the development on the Dinslaken side, which divides some residential streets from the city limits.
