The district covers an area of 2.62 square kilometers and forms part of Duisburg city center. It is surrounded by the old town to the north and the Hochfeld district to the south and west. On the eastern edge, railway facilities form the boundary to neighboring Neudorf . The distance to the Rhine flowing in the west is about two kilometers.

The A59 , which is connected to the A40 by the Duisburg junction about one kilometer to the north, runs through the area of the district . Another important traffic structure, Duisburg Central Station, is partly in the area of the Dellviertel. There is also a connection to the Duisburg Stadtbahn network , which runs through the district in several lines.

history

For an expanded historical context, see also the history of the city of Duisburg .

In the Middle Ages, today's Dellviertel was still an unpopulated area south of the former city limits of Duisburg. Even on a map from 1566, it is still largely undeveloped. It was outside the historic city walls. The development into a densely built-up district did not begin until the late 19th century and was accompanied by a significant expansion of the road network. This went hand in hand with the development of Duisburg into a large city. In this context, Dellplatz , where several streets meet in a ring, became the central marketplace. In addition, various industrial and craft companies settled in the Dellviertel. During the Second World War , bombing raids in 1944 caused severe damage. From the 1960s in particular, various cultural institutions emerged in the Dellviertel that shape its image today.

Origin of name

The current name is derived from the former name Papendelle , which was used in the Middle Ages to refer to the then uninhabited area. The ending -delle indicates a damp depression. This part of the name was used to form today's name.

Culture and sights

Königstrasse, the city's most important shopping street, lies between the Dellviertel and the adjacent old town. In its public perception, however, the district is primarily shaped by its variety of cultural offerings, which are primarily located around the central Dellplatz . In addition, it is particularly important as a residential area.

Well-known cultural institutions include the Lehmbruck Museum and the filmforum Duisburg , which is the oldest municipal cinema in Germany. There is also the cabaret theater The Column , the Theater am Marientor , the Cubus Kunsthalle and the DKM Museum . The Stadtwerketurm, which is illuminated at night, is also located in the area of the district. The district includes several green spaces, including Immanuel Kant Park , and many places have old trees. There are also numerous restaurants and bars around Dellplatz in particular.
