On the north side are the Averdunkplatz with the Averdunk Centrum , the König-Heinrich-Platz with the CityPalais as well as the District and Regional Court of Duisburg , followed by the “Bankenmeile” with the main branches of Sparkasse Duisburg , Commerzbank , the former Dresdner Bank , Deutsche Bank and the National Bank .
On the south side there are many small shops, the Forum Duisburg and the Königsgalerie Duisburg (in the area of the Kuhstrasse).
Among other things, the “Lifesaver” by Niki de Saint Phalle stands on Königstrasse , one of five fountain sculptures by various artists, which is also one of Duisburg's landmarks.
history
The current road connection from the Duisburg Kuhtor to the east was called Schwedenallee until the middle of the 19th century in its first section to the then cemetery at today's König-Heinrich-Platz . After the visit of the King of Prussia , Friedrich Wilhelm IV. , In 1847 it was renamed Königstraße.
The street was characterized by the fact that representative villas were lined up on both sides. In 1905 Königstrasse was given a Bismarck memorial, which was melted down during World War II . In 1909 the König-Heinrich-Platz was laid out.
Only after the Second World War did it develop into the main shopping street, after Duisburg's old town and Burgplatz lost their importance as the main business district.
Until construction of the Stadtbahn began in 1978, Königstrasse was a four-lane avenue with a tram and the main traffic axis of Duisburg city center.
