history

The “Städtische Sparkasse zu Duisburg” was founded on March 4, 1844.

A municipal reorganization on October 1, 1905 resulted in the amalgamation of the previously independent municipalities of Ruhrort, Meiderich and Beeck with the city of Duisburg. The previously independent municipal savings banks joined the Städtische Sparkasse zu Duisburg at the same time. The savings banks Hamborn and Huckingen were added through further municipal incorporations in 1929.

The major regional reform of 1975 resulted in further amalgamation of savings banks: The savings banks in the communities of Rheinhausen, Walsum and Homberg merged with the Stadtsparkasse Duisburg. In this context, the rounding off of business areas was inevitable. The Stadtsparkasse Duisburg took over the Baerl branch from the Städtische Sparkasse Moers and the Rumeln and Kaldenhausen branches from the Kreissparkasse Moers.

While savings bank mergers in North Rhine-Westphalia were only possible between neighboring institutes until 2002, an amendment to the Sparkassengesetz NRW also enabled so-called jump mergers between savings banks that were not directly neighboring. As a result, the Stadtsparkasse Duisburg merged with the Stadtsparkasse Kamp-Lintfort in 2003.

Since then, the bank has been called "Sparkasse Duisburg". The city of Duisburg holds 89.5% and the city of Kamp-Lintfort with 10.5% of the Sparkasse Duisburg indirectly through the Sparkasse Association of the Cities of Duisburg and Kamp-Lintfort, which was founded as part of the merger.
