It was created in 1995 according to the construction plans of the architect Helmut Kohl and served Stella AG from January 1996 to November 1999 as a stage for their musical production Les Misérables . The city had made the land available for the theater building at a reasonable price. In the course of the operator's insolvency proceedings , the musical was discontinued in 1999. A real estate subsidiary of the city then bought the theater building back.

It has 1,540 seats and served as an alternative stage for the Duisburg Philharmonic until the new Mercator Hall opened within the City Palais on April 21, 2007. The Theater am Marientor is currently used in particular for show and tour productions. In the meantime it is also a casting location for various TV productions such as You Can Dance (SAT 1) or Popstars (PRO 7). After ten auditions for the TV station RTL's Das Supertalent format in August 2009, another pop stars casting took place in the Duisburg theater in June 2010. In addition, DVD recordings for Mirja Boes and Dieter Nuhr's annual review were recorded several times for ZDF .

After the Christmas musical Vom Geist der Weihnacht in November and December 2007, the shows Elvis and Blues Brothers - I'm a Soulman by Berlin producer Bernhard Kurz were staged in September and October 2008, a show event with a total of 30 days in the Theater am Marientor. The world's best US imitators of the Stars in Concert series , which is played all year round in the Berlin Hotel Estrel , have so far followed around 3.3 million visitors at venues around the world. With the show ABBA - Thank You for the Music , the Berlin production returned to the Theater am Marientor in October 2009.

In December 2008 the Christmas musical Der kleine Lord with the music of Konstantin Wecker , which had its world premiere in 2007 in Frankfurt am Main and Munich , was performed in Duisburg.

Thanks to the support of an event agency, the Theater am Marientor was able to establish itself as a concert venue in 2009 with international productions such as Steve Winwood , Ultravox and The Cult .

Short appearances are also made in the theater. Several comedy appearances have already been recorded for television, e.g. B. Johann Koenig's program Total Bock for Remmi Demmi and Ralf Schmitz 'program Schmitzophren . The production The Dome was recorded in December 2011.

The theater was operated by Duisburg Marketing GmbH until December 31, 2011. Due to the financial situation of the city of Duisburg, the operation of the Theater am Marientor was discontinued as a subsidy operation at the end of 2011. Demolition of the theater was considered.

Since the Mercatorhalle was closed in August 2012 due to fire safety deficiencies , the TaM has once again been the venue for the Duisburg Philharmonic. By installing a control for the room acoustics, the hall can meet the requirements of a concert hall for chamber to philharmonic concerts and can also be used by local organizers for speech and light music events.
