The Cult is an English rock band formed in 1983 by Ian Astbury under the name Death Cult and emerged from the band The Southern Death Cult .

history

Astbury's family moved to Bradford , Yorkshire , where he teamed up with David Burrows ( guitar ), Barry Jepson ( electric bass ) and Haq Quereshi ( drums ) to form The Southern Death Cult in 1981 . Two years later, Astbury broke up the band and founded The Cult , initially under the name Death Cult . The members were Ray Mondo (drums), Billy Duffy (guitar), who previously played at Theater of Hate , and Jamie Stewart (bass). At the time, Ian Astbury appeared in drastic make-up - a kind of war paint, even more so than in The Southern Death Cult times, which was supposed to establish the “Indian image” of The Cult.

Mondo was replaced by Nigel Preston after the first EP was released in 1983 . In the spring of 1984 they renamed themselves The Cult , for fear of being pushed too much into the Gothic corner and to ensure success in the USA. In the same year, the debut Dreamtime came out, which contained some Death Cult songs and made it into the UK charts. Preston left the band a year later and was replaced by Mark Brzezicki (former big country drummer), who in turn was replaced by Les Warner . The second album Love sold 200,000 copies in the UK and produced the two hits Rain and the newly recorded Revolution . With Electric , their third album, which was produced by Rick Rubin , The Cult developed a new, rougher style in the genre of hard rock and opened up new audiences.

Les Warner was replaced on drums in 1988, Mickey Curry first played Sonic Temple in 1989 , the band's greatest success. Matt Sorum then played on the accompanying tour. After Sorum switched to Guns n 'Roses in 1990 , Mickey Curry played again for the band. Numerous other changes of members followed. In 1995 the band separated, which at that time consisted only of Astbury and Duffy as permanent members.

In 1999 The Cult reunited. In 2000, the band recorded the song Painted on My Heart for the film Just 60 Seconds , which was written by Diane Warren and was released as a single. It is also played in the film itself, in a scene where a car is stolen. In 2001 the album Beyond Good and Evil was released . A longer period of inactivity followed again since 2002.

In 2006 the band made a comeback and toured North America and Europe. The first concert took place on March 1st, 2006 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco . A European tour took place in the summer of 2006, which was continued in the UK in autumn 2006. The band also appeared in support of The Who in Germany in 2007 . The album Born into This was then released in September 2007.

In 2008 the band went on tour again to promote the album Born into This ; the only concert in Germany took place on March 6, 2008 in the Live Music Hall in Cologne .

In October 2009 the band also gave two concerts in Germany as part of the Love Live Tour , in Duisburg and Berlin . On this tour, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the release, the complete Love album was played, followed by a "best of" part. A remastered new edition of the album Love was released in the same year. The box set also includes a CD with demos and a live CD from a concert from 1985.

In 2010 the band went on tour again, in July 2010 the only concert in Germany on the tour was played in Jüchen . The single Everyman and Woman Is a Star was released on August 1, 2010 as a download.

In May 2012 the band released their ninth album Choice of Weapon , which was produced by Chris Goss and Bob Rock . In advance, the song Lucifer was made available free of charge on the band's homepage. The Cult will release their tenth studio album, Hidden City, in February 2016.
