Sonic Temple is the fourth studio album by the rock band The Cult . The album was released in 1989 by the Beggars Banquet Records label. The album, the second after Electric , on which the band played Hard Rock , was the band's most successful album and received good reviews. It peaked at number ten on the US Billboard 200 .

Emergence

In the fall of 1988 the band went into the studio in Vancouver , Canada with Bob Rock , who had previously been assistant to Aerosmith producer Bruce Fairbairn - Sonic Temple was one of his first own productions . She had written 21 songs. Jamie Stewart, who had played the electric rhythm guitar, now took over the bass again. John Webster played the keyboards. There was also a change on the drums. The demos were recorded with Chris Taylor , and Kiss drummer Eric Singer also helped out during the demo sessions. Mickey Curry then acted as session drummer during the studio recordings, so can be heard on the album. Subsequently, the band recruited Matt Sorum for the tour. But he switched to Guns N 'Roses after the tour, on which the band also accompanied Metallica on their Damaged Justice tour . Four singles, including Fire Woman and the ballad Edie (Ciao Baby) made it onto music television.

reception

Steve Huey from Allmusic gave Sonic Temple 3.5 out of five stars. He called the album more varied than its predecessor. Not all of the experiments worked, but enough to put the album in the top ten. Rock Hard magazine put the album at number 170 on its list of 500 titles. In comparison with Electric, Klaus Himmelstein spoke of a more mature and balanced work. "At Sonic Temple prove The Cult, that melancholy can certainly put into notes without the Weltschmerz- suicide -Gejaule effeminate Grunge - protagonists to strive." The panel offer "sufficient sing-along potential for barbecues and lonely road trips."

In 2014, the album was ranked 72 on the list of the 100 best metal and hard rock albums of all time of Rolling Stone .
