Sire Records , or Sire for short , is an American music label that was founded in 1966 by Seymour Stein and Richard Gottehrer and is now part of the Warner Music Group .

history

Sire Records, founded in 1966 by Seymour Stein and Richard Gottehrer , initially operated in the music industry through a distribution agreement with the English label Blue Horizon Records , which had artists such as Fleetwood Mac and Chicken Shack under contract. In the 1970s, the label associated with the genre of progressive rock , supported by its new distribution partner Warner Bros. , devoted itself to less commercially oriented projects, such as bands Ramones and Talking Heads from the New York punk scene .

With the purchase of the label by Warner Bros. in 1980, an increased expansion began by subcontracting musicians and music groups such as Madonna , The Cult , The Pretenders , Echo and the Bunnymen , Lou Reed , Primal Scream , My Bloody Valentine , David Byrne , Depeche Mode , K. d. lang , Morrissey , Throwing Muses , Belly , Waterlillies and Dinosaur Jr.

Fifteen years later, in 1995, Sire was taken over as an imprint by the Elektra Entertainment Group to develop new musical "acts" such as Aphex Twin , The Waltons , Rheostatics and The Greenberry Woods . The already established singers and band formations listed in the music catalog were divided between Elektra and Warner Bros. Shortly afterwards, in 1998, Sire left the Elektra Entertainment Group, but remained in business connection with the Warner Music Group as a "boutique label" and marketed a variety of artists including the Pet Shop Boys and The Tragically Hip .

In 1999, London Records acquired by Warner Music Group and with Sire Records in London-Sire Records merged . The newly created label was able to record various successes in the fields of alternative and electronica with musicians and music groups such as Guster , Harvey Danger , Morcheeba , Paul Oakenfold including The Tragically Hip .
