The Hip 09.jpg

The Tragically Hip were a 1983 in Kingston , Ontario , founded Canadian rock band.

Career

The Tragically Hip - often referred to simply as The Hip - consisted of Gordon Downie ( vocals / guitar ), Rob Baker ( guitar ), Johnny Fay ( drums / percussion ), Paul Langlois ( guitar / vocals ) and Gord Sinclair ( bass / vocals ).

In 1987 they were signed by MCA after Bruce Dickinson saw them at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto . In the same year they released the EP The Tragically Hip . Still, they remained relatively unknown until Up To Here was released in 1989 . Up To Here, however, made them one of the most influential bands in Canada. In 1992 they developed the Another Roadside Attraction Festival, which tours Canada and gives small, emerging bands the opportunity to perform in front of a large audience.

The band is very popular in Canada, while it is rather unknown in the USA or Europe . This may also be due to the fact that the keynote and the content of their music can also be understood as a paian to the Canadian culture of small town life and ice hockey and to the country itself.

Nevertheless, they recorded the live album Live Between Us in Detroit in 1996 and appeared on Woodstock in 1999 . In 2005 the band was honored with the induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame .

2016 was when Gord Downie cancer diagnosed, he died of the consequences of which on 17 October 2017th
