He is a founding member and songwriter of The Cult alongside Ian Astbury . He was also a member of the Theater of Hate and The Nosebleeds in the early 1980s, and later co-founded Circus Diablo .

Career

Duffy grew up in Manchester and learned to play guitar at the age of 14. In 1977 he played with the later front man of The Smiths , Morrissey , in the band The Nosebleeds. Duffy encouraged the latter to sing and taught guitarist Johnny Marr to play the guitar.

After the peak of the punk phase, Duffy played after interludes with Slaughter & the Dogs , Studio Sweethearts and Lonesome No More for the more reserved Theater of Hate. He met the frontman of Southern Death Cult , Ian Astbury . After a first phase together from 1983 as Death Cult , they called themselves Duffy's wishes from 1984 The Cult. Duffy also created his own sound with a Gretsch White Falcon from the 1970s. He later also played a Gibson Les Paul regularly .

This was followed by great success with The Cult in the 1980s with the albums Love , Electric and Sonic Temple . Duffy's guitar sound changed in a harder direction , especially with Rick Rubin's influence from Electric . After the less successful period as a duo in the early 1990s and the temporary separation from Astbury, Duffy played with Mike Peters from The Alarm in a project called Colorsound, which released a self-titled album. Another project was Vent 414.

In 1999 Duffy reformed The Cult with Astbury, and in 2001 the comeback Beyond Good and Evil appeared . Subsequently, the band was again on hold, because in 2002 Ian Astbury received an offer to sing with The Doors .

In 2006 Duffy got a role in the unreleased film Sin-Jin Smyth directed by Ethan Dettenmaier . In the same year he founded Circus Diablo with the former The Cult tour bassist Billy Morrison as singer . Matt Sorum played the drums and Ricky Warwick played the rhythm guitar. In 2007 the current The Cult album Born into This was released .
