Matt Sorum (2012)

Matt Sorum (born November 19, 1960 in Long Beach , California ) is an American drummer who joined the band Velvet Revolver in 2003. Before that he played with Neurotic Outsiders and The Cult and in 1990 replaced Steven Adler with Guns N 'Roses . There he got out again in 1997.

Life

Sorum started playing drums when he saw Ringo Starr of the Beatles play on the Ed Sullivan Show . His brothers Mark and Mike introduced him to songs by Jimi Hendrix , Cream and the Doors . He started a high school band called Prophecy . At the age of 14 he played in clubs such as The Starwood , The Whiskey a Go-Go and Gazzarri's Crazy Horse West . Other bands that played there included Van Halen and Devo .

After his high school graduation left Sorum Prophecy , packed his things and boarded with 40 dollars and a backpack his 64'er Rambler station wagon . While jamming at the Central Club , now called The Viper Room , he met guitarist Gregg Wright and toured the southern United States with him. At the age of 19, Sorum was in New Orleans and played in clubs like Jimmy's and OL 'Man Rivers . After returning to Los Angeles, he played a few gigs with Shaun Cassidy , Belinda Carlisle and Solomon Burke . The result was that Sorum was soon known throughout the city as a good drummer and notorious for playing in about ten bands at the same time.

During a concert in an airport hotel, he met Tori Amos . The two instantly liked each other and founded Y Kant Tori Read . After they only played in clubs for two years, they got a recording deal with Atlantic Records ; however, the album flopped. Amos then decided to embark on a solo career, and Sorum recorded an album for Polygram in 1987 with The Jeff Paris Band . In 1988 Sorum heard about an audition by the British band The Cult . He auditioned and was immediately taken on as a drummer.

The Cult spent the next two years touring with Metallica and Aerosmith . The tour ended in the summer of 1990.

In the summer of 1990, drummer Steven Adler had to leave the hard rock band Guns N 'Roses because of his drug use . Guns N 'Roses rehearsed with a number of drummers, including Adam Maples from Sea Hags and Martin Chambers from the Pretenders , to find a successor for Adler. The band found none of the candidates good enough. Slash remembered the drummer he had seen at a The Cult gig at the Universal Amphitheater and asked Sorum without further ado if he would like to join Guns N 'Roses. The band loved him.

"They liked me for what I was doing - rock solid drumming."

- Matt Sorum

“The fact that Matt could play and fit in is what saved us. If we hadn't found somebody it would ultimately have been the demise of the band. Matt's been capable of keeping up with it, if not enhancing it totally, and bringing new stuff to it. "

- Axl Rose on Matt Sorum

After rehearsing for just a month, the recordings for the Use Your Illusion double album began. After the recordings, the band went on tour for a full three years. Sorum's first appearance with Guns N 'Roses was at the Rock in Rio festival in front of 140,000 fans.

He especially liked the live shows with his new band: “We don't have a set list. Rather we have a pick list. Sometimes it'll be 30 seconds before we go on-stage when Axl calls out whatever he thinks he can sing first. The second number - 'Mr Brownstone' - is set because I go into it. I play timpani . I hated this way of working at first, but I love it now 'cos it's fresh, especially when you're on a two-year tour. And we're so at ease with playing on big stages now. So if Axl throws out a song we haven't played for six months it might be a little shaky, but we're not freaking out about it. There's an adrenaline rush every night. "

It was nominated twice for a Grammy and won two MTV awards. After touring with Guns N 'Roses, Sorum formed the band Neurotic Outsiders with Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), John Taylor (Duran Duran) and Duff McKagan and recorded a record with them on Maverick Records in 1996 . They played in the Viper Room once a week .

From time to time guests like Billy Idol , Brian Setzer , Simon Le Bon and Iggy Pop played with them . In the spring of 1996 Sorum was part of the house band that accompanied artists such as Seal , Bo Diddley , Melissa Etheridge and BB King musically for the opening of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas . Sorum played with Sammy Hagar and Don Was at the Elvis Presley Tribute in Memphis and appeared with Billy Idol at Jay Leno . Matt Sorum played with the Buddy Rich Orchestra on Burnin and For Buddy, which were produced by Neil Peart ( Rush ).

He also played on some tracks on the solo albums by Duff McKagan and Gilby Clarke and was a drummer on Slash's Snakepit .

In the summer of 1997 he left Guns N 'Roses. In the period up to 1999 he worked with Sammy Hagar, Poe, Lanny Cordola , Candlebox, Sen-Dog from Cypress Hill , the blues legend Little Milton and Ronnie Spector, among others . In 1999 he went on tour again with The Cult and recorded with them the album Beyond Good and Evil produced by Bob Rock . Then they went on a world tour again, which lasted until 2001. In the winter of 2001 he was on tour with Aerosmith .

In 2003, a jam session with Duff McKagan, Slash, Izzy Stradlin and Dave Kushner followed in a studio in Los Angeles . This resulted in the band Velvet Revolver , who have so far released two albums, Contraband (2003) and Libertad (2007).

In the same year Sorum played a few concerts with his band Camp Freddy . Guests included Kid Rock, Macy Gray, Perry Farrell and Robbie Williams.

Sorum released his first solo album in October 2003.

On October 12, 2013 Matt Sorum married his long-time girlfriend Adriane "Ace" Harper. Glenn Hughes , among others, played at the wedding reception . On March 11, 2014, his solo album Stratosphere was released under the band name Matt Sorum's Fierce Joy , on which he took over vocals, guitar and piano.
